Welcome to The FairCoder

A Message From Gabrielle McKenzie

Over the past year, I’ve been researching how algorithms are quietly becoming part of our justice system. Tools like risk assessments are being used in bail hearings, sentencing, and parole decisions—often without much transparency or public awareness.

What I realized in that process is that the conversation around algorithmic justice isn’t just limited to coders or policymakers. It affects judges, lawyers, students, and everyday people. And most of us are learning about this in real time.

That’s why I created The FairCoder.

This newsletter is a space for staying connected—to the work happening through the FairCode Initiative, and to the broader effort to understand how technology is reshaping legal systems. My goal is to create a shared learning environment where updates, insights, and reflections can live side by side.

What to Expect

Each edition of The FairCoder will include:

  • Updates on FairCode research, projects, and policy work
  • Clear, accessible breakdowns of complex tools or legal ideas
  • Thoughtful reflections from people who are engaging with this space in different ways
  • Occasional opportunities to learn more, contribute, or collaborate

This isn’t about taking a side—it’s about making sense of what’s emerging. About creating a foundation for honest, informed conversations in a rapidly changing environment.

Why It Matters

We’re stepping into a space where technology and justice now overlap. There are no simple answers, and there’s no instruction manual for how to move forward. But I believe we can figure it out together—by staying curious, asking good questions, and sharing what we learn along the way.

That’s what The FairCoder is for.

Thank you for being part of it.
